When family and friends ask you to bring them a souvenir from your travels, they mean a commemorative keychain or bottle of regional wine. They don’t mean for you to bring home bed bugs. Unfortunately, if you are traveling to one of the following cities, you may be bringing home more than you bargained for. As named by Orkin Pest Control for the number of bed bug cases treated in major metropolitan areas, the ten worst cities for bed bugs are as follows.
- Baltimore, Maryland
- Washington, D.C.
- Chicago, Illinois
- Los Angeles, California
- Columbus, Ohio
- Cincinnati, Ohio
- Detroit, Michigan
- New York, New York
- San Francisco – Oakland – San Jose, California
- Dallas – Fort Worth, Texas
For the second year in a row, Baltimore tops the list as the worst city for bed bugs in the country. While New York’s concerted efforts to address the city-wide bedbug problem has paid off by dropping the city as a whole four spots, Dallas-Fort Worth’s bed bug issues helped it to climb five spots to reach the top 10. Entomologist Dr. Tim Husen explained in the Orkin report that the overall bed bug population is still on the rise across the country, reiterating that sanitation and cleanliness are not indicators for a bed bug infestation. New construction apartments, historical condos, five-star hotels and budget accommodations all have the same risk of infestation.
How Do You Avoid Bed Bugs?
If you travel to one of the worst bed bug cities in the country, it may seem like bed bugs are unavoidable. However, there are precautions that greatly reduce the likelihood of bringing these creepy creatures home with you. First, when you walk into a hotel room, place your baggage immediately in the bathtub. The smooth surfaces in the bathroom make it difficult for bed bugs to crawl into your luggage. Next, conduct a thorough inspection of the room, taking note of any red or rust colored stains on the mattress or furniture. Be sure to inspect the corners of the room for signs of bed bugs, including the corners of the closet. If you find any bed bugs, notify the front desk immediately and ask to be assigned to another room. While most cities do not legally require a hotel to accommodate someone who suspects there are bed bugs in their assigned room, it is considered a courtesy to guests.
Even if you carefully inspect your hotel room, it is possible that you will still be bitten by bed bugs that lie in wait for you to fall asleep. If you have red, itchy bumps the next morning or find out after you return home that you have unwittingly brought bed bugs to your home, your only recourse may be found with the help of an experienced bed bug attorney.
